KEEP THE ORIGINALS
A signature belongs
to its original document.
A merged reading copy is a new PDF. Digital signatures on source documents do not transfer to it.
Reading is different from verification
A visible signature image or signature field may appear on a copied page. Its appearance is not evidence that a digital signature has been preserved or verified. The new PDF is not the signed original, even when its pages look the same.
Exporting, reordering, adding an index, or merging source pages creates a different document. Use the reading copy for convenient reading and review only when that fits your requirements.
What the originals ZIP preserves
The originals ZIP contains extracted attachments in their original byte form where extraction succeeds, along with the export report. Keeping those bytes is useful for preserving your sources, but it does not establish the validity of any signature.
A signature may apply to the outer portfolio, to an individual embedded document, or to a particular signed revision. Keep the original outer portfolio separately. Extracting its attachments does not preserve the full portfolio’s signature context or its attachment relationships.
What Unfold does not determine
- Whether a signer’s identity or certificate should be trusted
- Whether a certificate was valid, revoked, or expired at a relevant time
- Whether timestamps, signed revisions, or permitted changes satisfy a verification policy
- Whether a document is authentic, complete, legally admissible, or appropriate for a particular filing or records requirement
A safer review workflow
- Keep the original outer portfolio unchanged.
- Download and retain the originals ZIP and the export report.
- Review the merged PDF for missing content, rendering changes, and skipped files.
- Use a suitable signature-verification tool on the original documents when verification matters.
- Follow the recipient’s document requirements before sharing or submitting a reading copy.
